Biographical

Nancy Cannon-O’Connell brings over twenty years of management experience to her work with senior managers and teams. She has held the position of vice president for strategic development in two national health care firms and has consulted extensively on issues such as management responses to accelerated market changes, leadership development in times of organizational change, and product development strategies to meet shifting customer demands. Her consulting engagements have included work in South America, Europe and South Africa. In the course of her work, Nancy has coached/mentored scores of managers and has been highly effective in developing key high potential individuals into successful professionals and members of outstanding teams. Nancy’s diverse portfolio of business experience coupled with her strong interpersonal skills create a thoughtful approach to problem solving that readily builds trust and acceptance, and make her an asset to her coaching clients. Her training has been with the Hudson Institute (Santa Barbara, CA). She is a member of the International Coaching Federation.

Executive Performance

For a successful executive client in the financial services industry, a coaching relationship was established when the client grew concerned about economic trends and the potential for large-scale ripples through her core service system. She worked with her coach to outline a plan to adopt new leadership behaviors, and to help guide the bank through the coming economic turbulence. She also identified her own limitations and worked on communication skills, delegation and truth-telling.

Generative Collaboration

With a ‘rough around the edges’ serial- entrepreneur who had just secured new funding for his company, we worked on a plan for him to meet the demand that he ‘go to the next level’ with his management and leadership of the company. We designed a 4 month plan for his rapid acquisition of new leadership and relational behaviors. We attended weekly meetings, met with key stakeholders (including funder and one key customer) to create a New Leader profile for his use. We also consulted on key strategic imperatives for the company. Both the formal weekly coaching sessions and regular and unvarnished feedback were keys to our successful collaboration.

Executive Coaching / Leadership Development

Coaching is an ongoing professional relationship that helps people generate extraordinary results – for themselves, their peer group, their subordinates and their enterprises. We work with our clients on an agreement about timeline and outcomes. Through the process of coaching, our senior leader and mid-management clients identify change they want to make, commit to it, and take action to make the changes. This coaching is live-action and takes place in the context of the client’s work. Together, we examine cases or business problems and their resolution. As coach, we provide a sounding board, ask questions to illuminate issues and help clients to see what is possible to accomplish. For example, with accountability on both sides, this coaching relationship can:
  • bring focus and clarity to a leader who has been promoted & is facing a reorganization
  • lead to new learning & a realignment with company goals by a long-time senior manager who has gotten feedback that he needs to be more of a strategic thinker
  • optimize individual potential and business results for a manager who loves what s/he is doing but feels that s/he needs to get to the next level

Team Renewal & Large Group Coaching

Teams are comprised of individuals with personal goals, direction and values. Team coaching supports the identification of ways to better collaborate to meet collective-objectives. We deliver team-renewal strategies to the group as a whole, work with individuals to design communication and work-pattern changes that enhance performance and coach team-members around their crucial contributions to the group. We will co-design this coaching with the company or the team leaders in order to address specific needs in the near-term. The group often drives the coaching agenda around issues of team dynamics, individual differences, talents, cultural values and/or performance methods, while also addressing immediate business objectives and work products. Results with team-renewal coaching include:
  • heightened understanding of the shared vision and goals of the team, resulting in better performance and higher satisfaction among team members
  • improved communication, enhanced by group-defined expectations, leading to higher productivity and fewer errors
  • accelerated knowledge transfer and, thus, a quicker development timeframe
  • improved performance against P & L goals
  • emergence of ‘peer coaching’ behaviors within the team

We conduct presentation-style sessions for groups; these introduce ‘coaching’ to the audience through a discussion of one model of human development and renewal, the Hudson Institute’s Cycle of Renewal. For a group of almost any size, we provide an overview of the renewal cycle and take the audience through a set of exercises, small group discussions and personal-reflection time. Participants leave the experience with their own ‘renewal plan’.
